How Do FOMC Decisions Move Gold? Past Reactions and Rules

How a Fed (FOMC) rate decision moves gold through the dollar and yields, with the real XAUUSD reactions to the Dec 2025, Sep 2026 and Oct 2026 decisions.

How do FOMC decisions move the gold price?

An FOMC decision moves gold through what it says about future US interest rates. A hawkish surprise usually lifts the dollar and yields and pushes gold down; a dovish one does the opposite. The first spike often reverses within minutes or hours, so the move that holds after the press conference matters more than the first candle.

Key takeaways

  • Gold pays no interest, so it reacts to the Fed through real yields and the US dollar. Higher expected rates usually weigh on gold; lower expected rates usually support it.
  • What moves price is the surprise, not the headline. A hike everyone expected can still lift gold; a "hold" with hawkish dissents can push it down.
  • In each of the last three decisions, gold's early move reversed within hours: up then down in September 2026, down then up in October 2026 and December 2025.
  • The decision is at 00:00 PKT in winter (23:00 PKT in summer) and the press conference starts 30 minutes later. The next one is 9 December 2026, which is 00:00 PKT on 10 December.
  • FXD treats the decision as a risk window, not a setup: plans aim to close targets before it, and a spike into a zone still needs its normal trigger.

Why the Fed moves gold

The Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) sets the US policy rate eight times a year. Gold has no yield, so the higher the return on dollars and Treasuries, the more it costs to hold gold instead. A hawkish Fed (higher rates, or more hikes expected) usually means a stronger dollar and higher yields, and gold priced in dollars tends to fall. A dovish Fed works the other way.

Markets price the decision days in advance. FXD's 28 Oct daily brief noted that a hold was expected with about 90% probability. When the outcome matches, the reaction comes from the details instead: the vote split, the statement's wording, the dot plot (four meetings a year) and what the chair says at the press conference.

Three patterns stand out:

  1. The headline is not the whole story. September's hike was unanimous, but the dot plot and Chair Warsh's comments were read as hawkish, and gold gave up a 1% gain. Tai Wong, quoted by Nation Thailand, called it "hawkish on top of a hawkish dot plot".
  2. The first move often fails. In October and December gold dropped first and then bounced back. In September an early 1% gain turned into a 1.2% loss. Treat the first candle like a possible liquidity sweep until a close confirms it.
  3. Other drivers can outweigh the Fed. On 28 October Kitco said a softer dollar did not help much, because oil above $115 and a 10-year yield near 5.0% kept rate-hike fears alive.

What it looked like on an FXD signal

FXD's 28 October plan aimed to close targets before the decision. The "scalp sell" at 4058–4064 shows why:

Time (PKT, 28 Oct 2026)What happened
15:00Sell triggered on a rejection in 4058–4064 before the US session
23:00Fed decision (summer time, US still on daylight saving)
23:05First target 4033 hit after the Fed (low 4030.7); stop moved to entry
23:35Price back up to entry (high 4062.5): closed at break-even, 0R

The move from the low back to entry took half an hour. A trader who held on for the second target, without moving the stop, would have watched a winner turn into a loss. The result stays in the archive on the signals page, like every other signal.

The next FOMC decision is on Wednesday 9 December 2026 (a dot-plot meeting), which is 00:00 PKT on Thursday 10 December, with the press conference at 00:30 PKT.
