**What is a turning point in gold trading?** A turning point is the price level where a gold plan's bias flips. On FXD it always comes with a candle close: for example, an H4 close above 4046 turns a sell-rallies plan into a buy plan. Until that candle closes beyond the level, the bias stands, even if price spikes through it.

> **Key takeaways**
>
> - A **turning point** is one price that splits the plan in two: below it one bias applies, above it the other.
> - It only counts on a **candle close** on the timeframe named next to it (M30, H1 or H4). A wick through the level is not a flip.
> - FXD publishes a **weekly** turning point (4046 for 26–30 Oct 2026) and usually a tighter **daily** one in each brief.
> - Stops for trades with the bias usually sit **just beyond** the turning point, because a close there means the plan was wrong.
> - It is not the same as a classic **pivot point**, which is a formula from the previous day's high, low and close.

## What a turning point is

Every FXD outlook has a bias, such as "sell rallies", and one level that would prove that bias wrong. That level is the turning point. It works like the old chart idea that broken support becomes resistance and broken resistance becomes support, which [altFINS calls the polarity principle](https://altfins.com/knowledge-base/polarity-principle): once a level breaks, "its role is reversed."

The difference is that a turning point is written down **before** the session, with the exact condition that flips it. On the 26–30 October 2026 weekly outlook the line reads: "4046: turning point, H4 close above = trend change" ([this week's outlook](https://fxdaily.news/blog/gold-weekly-outlook-26-30-oct-2026)).

## How to read one

| Part of the line | Example | What it means |
| --- | --- | --- |
| The level | 4046 | XAUUSD price in dollars per ounce, the price your broker shows |
| The timeframe | H4 | A 4-hour candle has to **close** beyond the level |
| The direction | close above | Only a close on this side changes the plan |
| The result | trend change | The sell-rallies bias is off; look for buys instead |

Three rules follow from that:

1. **Wait for the close.** A 4-hour candle that spikes to 4060 and closes at 4040 has not flipped anything.
2. **Use the named timeframe.** An M30 close above an H4 turning point is an early warning, not a flip.
3. **Below it, the bias stands.** Sell setups below a sell-side turning point stay valid until the close happens; buy setups wait.

## This week's turning points and what happened

| Day (2026) | Turning point | Condition | What price did | Source |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Mon 26 Oct | 3994.6 (daily) | M30 close above = up | The 18:30 PKT M30 bar dipped to 3992.8 and closed 3997.2, above the level. The breakout buy reached both targets (+2.17R) | 26 Oct brief, signal notes |
| Tue 27 Oct | 4009 (daily) | H1 close above = up | The 09:00 PKT H1 bar closed within a dollar of 4009, so the buy's trigger couldn't be confirmed and it is marked unverified | 27 Oct brief, signal notes |
| Wed 28 Oct | 4052.9 (daily) | M30 close above = 4085 | M30 bars closed above 4052.9 at 14:30 and 17:00 PKT, which made the sell below it unverified | 28 Oct brief, signal notes |
| Thu 29 Oct | 4046 (weekly) | H4 close above = trend change | Gold spiked to about 4,083 after the Fed, then was back at 4,027 by 11:22 PKT, under the level | 29 Oct brief |

Two lessons from the week:

- **A spike is not a flip.** After the Fed on Wednesday night gold traded well above 4046, but by Thursday morning it was back below. Without an H4 close above 4046 the weekly sell-rallies bias still stood.
- **"Almost" a close is a problem, not a signal.** On Tuesday the H1 close landed within a dollar of 4009. We don't guess which side it was; the result is recorded as unverified and kept off the score on [this week's signal results](https://fxdaily.news/signals).

## Turning point vs pivot point

| | FXD turning point | Classic pivot point |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Where it comes from | The level the plan names as its line in the sand (EFMS TRADE weekly outlook, or the day's brief) | A formula: (previous high + low + close) ÷ 3 |
| What flips it | A close on a named timeframe | Trading above or below it |
| How many levels | One per plan | The pivot plus support and resistance lines (S1, R1 and more) |
| Purpose | Says when the bias is wrong | Gives a set of reference levels for the day |

The classic pivot point is "the arithmetic average of the high, low and closing prices" of the previous period, and trading above it "is usually evaluated as a bullish sentiment" ([Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pivot_point_(technical_analysis))). [Babypips](https://www.babypips.com/forexpedia/pivot-points) describes pivots as a quick way to set support and resistance levels. Both ideas share the same logic, one level that separates bullish from bearish, but an FXD turning point is a single chosen level with a confirmation rule attached.

## How it ties into stops and signals

On the weekly outlook, the H4 resistance sell at 4020–4040 had its stop at 4052, just above the 4046 turning point, and its trigger was "H4 not above 4046". That is the usual pattern: if price closes beyond the turning point, the idea behind the trade is gone, so the stop sits just past it.
