**What is a liquidity sweep in gold trading?** A liquidity sweep is when gold trades quickly through an obvious high or low, where many stop orders sit, and then fails to hold beyond it. On FXD a sweep only counts once a candle on the named timeframe closes back inside the level. Until that close, it can still turn into a real breakout.

> **Key takeaways**
>
> - A **liquidity sweep** is a run through an obvious level (a previous day's low, a swing high, the year's low) that triggers the stop orders resting there, followed by a **failure to hold** beyond it.
> - The sweep itself is **not** the signal. On FXD a sweep buy or sell needs a **candle close back inside** the level on the timeframe the plan names (M15, M30, H1 or H4).
> - If price **closes and stays** beyond the level, it was a **breakout**, not a sweep. The plan's breakdown or breakout scenario takes over.
> - A close that lands within a dollar or two of the level is **not confirmation**. FXD records those signals as unverified rather than guessing.
> - This week's plan uses one: the **3840–3875 buy** only counts after a sweep and a close back above.

## What a liquidity sweep is

Traders put their stop losses in obvious places: just under a recent low if they are long, just over a recent high if they are short. Breakout traders also leave orders there. [ATAS](https://atas.net/technical-analysis/what-is-liquidity-sweep-how-to-trade-it) lists visible swing highs and lows, round numbers and trendlines as the usual spots. [FOREX.com](https://forex.com/ie/glossary/stop-loss-hunting) describes the effect: when that cluster of stops is triggered, price often jumps through the level as the orders fill.

A **sweep** is what happens when that jump does not last. Price runs through the level, fills the stops, and then comes straight back. [LuxAlgo](https://www.luxalgo.com/library/concept/liquidity-sweep/) defines it as a run through a level where resting orders cluster that then fails to hold beyond it. You will also hear it called a **stop hunt**, a **liquidity grab** or, in Smart Money Concepts, a sweep of buy-side or sell-side liquidity.

| Where the stops sit | Whose stops | A sweep looks like | The idea it gives |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Below a previous day's low (PDL) | Buyers' stop losses, breakout sellers | A spike under the low, then a close back above | Possible buy |
| Above a previous day's high (PDH) | Sellers' stop losses, breakout buyers | A spike over the high, then a close back below | Possible sell |
| Below the year's or month's low | Long-term buyers' stops | A dip to a new low that is reclaimed | Possible buy, often a bigger one |
| Round numbers such as 3,900 or 4,000 | Both sides | A wick through the number that closes back | Weak on its own; needs a zone too |

## Sweep or breakout? The close decides

In the moment a sweep and a breakout look identical: price trades through the level. The difference only shows on the close. ATAS puts it this way: "the sweep itself is not a reversal signal". What matters is whether price returns back through the level or holds beyond it.

| | Liquidity sweep | Real breakout |
| --- | --- | --- |
| What price does | Runs through the level, then comes back | Runs through the level and stays there |
| The candle close | Back inside the level | Beyond the level |
| What usually follows | A move the other way, towards the next zone | Follow-through in the breakout direction |
| What FXD does | The sweep buy or sell can trigger | The sweep idea is off; the breakout or breakdown setup takes over |

That is why every FXD sweep setup has two parts in its trigger: the sweep **and** a close back inside. Three rules follow:

1. **No close, no trade.** A spike under a low is only half the trigger. Wait for the candle on the named timeframe to finish.
2. **"Almost" is not a close.** If the close lands within a dollar of the level, the trigger isn't confirmed. Skip it.
3. **Put the stop beyond the sweep.** If price goes back through the swept level and holds, the idea was wrong, so the stop sits past the sweep's extreme, not at a round number.

## Gold examples from FXD's own plans

| Date (2026) | Plan and level | Trigger as published | What happened | Result |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| 26–30 Oct (weekly) | Favourite buy 3941–3952, below the 3941 yearly low | Sweep below 3941, then an H1 or H4 close back above | On Friday 30 Oct gold broke below 3941 and closed the week at 3,875 with no reclaim | A breakdown, not a sweep. The buy never set up |
| Fri 30 Oct (daily) | "PDL sweep buy" 3988–4003, previous day's low 3994.1 | Spike below the previous day's low, close back above; buy the retest | The 10:00 PKT M30 candle closed at 3993.9, within a dollar of the low | Unverified: the close back above can't be confirmed |
| Tue 3 Nov (weekly) | Demand 1 buy 3840–3875, stop 3825 | M15/H1 reversal: sweep and close back above, no blind buying | Pending at the time of writing; price 3,921 at 11:09 PKT (Kitco) | See [this week's signal results](https://fxdaily.news/signals) |

The first example is the most useful one. For a week, the plan's best buy depended on a sweep of the yearly low. When gold finally went through 3941, it didn't come back: it closed far below. A trader who bought the first dip under 3941, without waiting for the close back above, would have bought a breakdown. The [October 2026 signals recap](https://fxdaily.news/blog/gold-signals-recap-october-2026) has the full week.

The second shows why "almost" matters. The close back above the previous day's low missed by $0.20. FXD doesn't round that in its own favour: the signal is marked unverified and kept off the score.

## How to read a sweep line in an FXD signal

A sweep setup reads like any other signal (see [how to read a gold trade signal](https://fxdaily.news/blog/how-to-read-a-gold-trade-signal)), with the sweep in the trigger column:

| Part of the signal | This week's example | What it means |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Entry zone | 3840–3875 | The weekly demand zone where buyers are expected |
| Stop | 3825 | Below the zone: if price holds under it, the sweep idea is wrong |
| Targets | 3943 / 3976 | The next zones above, where sellers wait |
| Trigger | Sweep and close back above, M15/H1 | Price must dip into or under the zone **and** an M15 or H1 candle must close back above |

The sweep also has to happen near a level the plan already named. A sweep of a random intraday low in the middle of nowhere is just noise. On FXD the swept level is always a zone, a turning point (see [what a turning point is](https://fxdaily.news/blog/what-is-a-turning-point-in-gold-trading)) or the previous day's high or low.
