**How do you read a gold trade signal?** A gold signal gives an entry zone, a stop loss, targets and a trigger. Wait for the trigger, enter inside the zone, and size the trade so a hit stop loses only what you planned. R:R is reward divided by risk; take partial profit at TP1 and move the stop to break-even.

> **Key takeaways**
>
> - A signal is a **plan with a condition**: an entry zone, a stop loss, targets and a trigger that must happen first.
> - **R** is the distance from entry to stop. A **3R** setup makes three times what it risks, but only if price reaches that target.
> - **Size every trade from the stop**: position size = money you're willing to lose ÷ (stop distance × value per point).
> - Take **partial profit at TP1** and move the stop to break-even, so a winning trade can't turn into a full loss.
> - If price never reaches the zone or the trigger never happens, there is **no trade**.

## The parts of a signal

Here's a buy setup from our [weekly gold outlook for 26–30 October 2026](https://fxdaily.news/blog/gold-weekly-outlook-26-30-oct-2026):

| Part | Value | What it means |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Side | Buy | You profit if price rises |
| Entry zone | 3941–3952 | The area where the idea becomes valid |
| Stop loss | 3925 | Where the idea is wrong; close the trade |
| Targets | 3978 / 4002 / 4040 | TP1, TP2 and TP3, where profit is taken in stages |
| Trigger | Sweep below 3941, then an H1 or H4 close back above | What has to happen before you enter |
| R:R at TP2 | 2.58R | Reward at TP2 divided by the risk |

## What is a trigger, and why does it matter?

The zone tells you **where**; the trigger tells you **when**. In this example, price has to dip below 3941 (taking out the stops under the yearly low) and then close back above it on the 1-hour or 4-hour chart. Buying the zone without the trigger means buying into a market that may keep falling.

## How is risk-to-reward calculated?

Use the middle of the entry zone.

- Entry ≈ 3946.5
- Risk = 3946.5 − 3925 = **21.5 points**
- Reward to TP2 = 4002 − 3946.5 = **55.5 points**
- R:R = 55.5 ÷ 21.5 ≈ **2.58R**

A 2.58R trade only needs to win about 28% of the time to break even before costs (1 ÷ (1 + 2.58)). That's why traders accept a lower win rate on high R:R setups.

## How do I size the position?

Size from the stop, never from the target.

**Example:** a $1,000 account, risking 1% ($10) per trade, on a broker where 1 standard lot of XAUUSD (100 oz) is worth $100 per $1 move.

- Stop distance: 21.5 points ($21.50 per ounce)
- Loss per 0.01 lot (1 oz) at the stop: $21.50
- $10 ÷ $21.50 ≈ 0.46 oz, so **0.01 lot is already above 1% risk** on this account

On a small account, a wide gold stop often means the right size is the broker's minimum or no trade at all. Check your broker's contract size: some quote gold per 100 oz lot, others differ.

## Managing the trade

1. Enter only after the trigger.
2. At **TP1 (3978)**, close part of the position and move the stop to break-even.
3. Let the rest run to TP2 or TP3, or close it if price reaches a level that flips the bias.
4. Never move the stop further away to "give it room".

## What can go wrong?

- **Slippage:** on news or a gap, you can be filled past your stop.
- **Spreads:** gold spreads widen around releases and the daily break.
- **Stale levels:** the weekly outlook is written on Sunday; news can make a level wrong by Wednesday. Check the [daily brief](https://fxdaily.news/blog?type=daily).
